The Commonsia Letter — six open calls worth your weekend
A good week for open calls: a €50,000 ideas prize, a graduation competition that pays in internships, two free-to-enter briefs you can finish in a fortnight, and a conceptual one for when the studio brief feels too safe. One CEPT thesis closes it out, because the best reference for a climate studio is often a classmate's dissertation.

Buildner's Unbuilt Award 2027 — €50,000 for the project you never got to build
The third edition rewards unrealised designs on their own terms, which makes it the rare competition where a studio project or a thesis you already have can be the entry. Prize pool is €50,000; read the brief before polishing anything.

Krystal Design Award Graduation Competition — $10,000 pool and ten paid internships
Open to anyone who graduated in 2024, 2025 or 2026. The internships are the real prize for a fresh B.Arch: a jury drawn from large firms and university deans, and interviews with the winners.

LAMP 2026 — a lighting design competition that wants students
Eleventh edition, four subcategories (floor, table, pendant, sconce), and selected designers are shown in a curated installation. A compact brief that fits alongside a semester, and a portfolio piece that is not another building.

Bute Park Art Gallery — free to enter, £1,000 first prize
A theoretical temporary gallery on a historic site in Cardiff, with no entry fee and three honourable mentions. The kind of brief a second- or third-year can take seriously without a team or a budget.

The 3-Element Challenge — design with only three elements
Morphology Lab's first competition asks for a proposal built from three elements, read as materials, forms or concepts. Open to architects, designers, students and creatives worldwide; a good one for sharpening how you argue a concept.

From the shelves: blue-green infrastructure, temperature and groundwater in Ahmedabad
Shubhiksha Singhal's CEPT postgraduate thesis evaluates blue-green infrastructure against two things every Indian city is now measured on: heat and groundwater recharge. Useful grounding for anyone in a climate or landscape studio this semester.
